Youth Basketball Play at Halftime!

"Junior Pirates"

If you attended the most recent home basketball games you would have had the pleasure of watching our elementary students play basketball at the varsity halftimes.  As with anything, this does not happen without a lot of planning and volunteers.  I would like to thank all of those who have taken time out of their busy schedule to help our youth.

Mrs. Hamm’s Physical Education curriculum focuses on teaching her students the fundamentals of a variety of sports.  One of those sports is basketball.  Listed below is an example of the curriculum that she uses to teach students the fundamentals of basketball.

•       K-1

o   Teaches this age group the fundamentals of throwing and catching using the different throws in basketball.  (Chest pass, two hand overhand, bounce pass) and they work on dribbling using both left and right hands and using cones.

•       2nd

o   Is the same but incorporate baseball throw, more in-depth dribbling (shuffle, head up etc.), lay-ups and form on the jump shot.  The students will learn the basic rules so we can scrimmage.

•       3-6th

o   More in-depth with the step around bounce bass, baseball pass with both right and left hand, dribbling with defense player, lay-ups, jump shot, free throws, rules, defense (man, zone), scrimmage.

1st – 6th grade students have also attended “Youth Basketball Fun Days” on Saturdays.  Steve White, Jim Meuret, Tim Knaak, Jon Haase, Jeff Gutz, Kent Friedrich, Michelle Mosel, Scott Born and others have donated their Saturday afternoons to give students an opportunity to get together and enjoy playing basketball.

As I have mentioned numerous times and will again, I am always impressed with the commitment that this community has towards its youth.  It is truly inspiring to see so many individuals volunteer to help when it is going to benefit our youth.  If you have not had the opportunity to watch these students play, I have listed below the remainder of their schedule for playing during halftimes.
