Flat Stanley!
At the beginning of the year Mrs. Gutz's class read a story
called Flat
Stanley. In this story a young boy's bulletin board falls on him
during the
night and he wakes up to find himself completely flat. At first he
thinks
the idea of being flat is just awful until he realizes that now he
can
travel to visit all of his friends by mailing himself in an
envelope.
After reading this story each of the students created their own
"Flat
Stanley" out of cardboard and mailed him to their friends
throughout the
United States. In November they created a new "Flat Stanley" and
sent him
to Stacie Blair, a 1999 graduate of Plainview High School. She is
currently
participating in the ANDRILL (Antarctica Drilling) project in
Antarctica as
part of her Doctorate studies at Florida State University.
She recently sent them an email about Flat Stanley's Adventures
in
Antarctica. Stacie has been taking him around to see the sights.
Some of
the photos include Stanley with a weddel seal and an active
volcano.
also taken rides in a helicopter, on pisten bullies, and several other
vehicles. Along with the photos she explains to the children about some of
the scientific studies that are currently being conducted. She plans to
leave Antarctica and return to the states by Dec. 8. Later in the month she
will be back to Nebraska for a visit.
