Boys' Basketball vs. Neligh, Newman Grove

by Jerry Klein

January 11, 2008

Pirates Fall to Neligh

After trailing by just one point at half 22-23, the Pirates were outscored 36-21 in the second half and fell to conference for Neligh-Oakdale 59-43. Turnovers against the press, a problem that has plagued the Pirates in the past, again took its toll as they committed 14 turnovers. Shooting also needs to improve if the Pirates hope for more success in the future as the shot only 20% from behind the three-point arc and 35% from the field. In comparison the Warriors shot 77% from the field, with Riley Frasch and Tony Garcia being their leading scorers.

Three Pirates scored in double figures in the night, with Derek White scoring points, Seth Williams with 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Brett Korth had 10 points with 6 assists. Four other Pirates also contributed points. Go Pirates!!

Newman Grove Nails the Pirates

The Pirates went down to Newman Grove to play the one-lost Bluejays. In an amazing effort, the Bluejays open the night making their first 9 shots in a row, and giving them a 23-0 lead. The first quarter ended 25-6. After the poor opening the Pirates basically exchanged blows with the Jays for the remainder. The game finished 70-39 with the Pirates receiving their second loss in as many days. Poor shooting again attributed to the loss with the Pirates shooting 1-10 from three-point land and an appalling 11-42 from the field. One bright spot was the fact the Pirates went to the free throw line 24 times making 14 of them. The Jays finished shooting 40% from behind the 3-point line.

Brett Korth led the Pirates with 13 Points and Seth Williams contributed with 9. Ryan Nathan of Newman Grove had 27 points and Clayton Mason had a career high 18. Seth Williams also landed 9 rebounds, while Preston Doerr stole the ball 4 times. Go Pirates!
