The postponed Plainview Invitational Golf meet was held on a beautiful day, April 19th. Only two teams were unable to make it as they had previous commitments. Creighton repeated as the champion shooting 326. Creighton was led by the medallist Jared Jensen who shot 35 on the front and finished with 74. The runner-up was Fremont Bergan at 332 led by silver medallist Joey Spellerberg with 77. Plainview was third with 334 and was led by Nate Wragge who also shot 77 but lost on a scorecard playoff. Wragge ended up the 4th place medal.
Brett Korth and Josh Kounovsky tied for 16th with 85. Josh Scranton was one stroke from a medal with his 87, Jared Forbes, earning his first varsity start, completed the team scoring with a 98.
Also competing were Taylor Christiansen who shot 103 and Lucas Hitz with 111. With several members of the team gone, they were unable to field a full team. Christiansen had a good tournament except for three holes as he continues to improve. Hitz also had several bad holes that kept him from scoring lower which seems to be his downfall.
Plainview had the low back nine score but gave up too many strokes to Creighton on the front. Coach Knaak commented “ The team is starting to play as he expected they would. They still need to find a good ‘river card’.”
While the varsity was at the Plainview Invite, the reserve squad traveled to the Osmond Invite where they competed against 14 teams composed primarily of smaller schools. The reserves finished 11th out of the 14 schools. Ponca won the tournament with 312 as Plainview shot 396. Blatchford of Ponca was medallist with 71. Plainview was led by Jacob Proskovec who had a good round with 90. Britton Hamm continuing to improve shot 97. Nic Miller was next at 102 while Bret Springer had 107. Kenny Albin finished close behind with 108. Except for Miller, this was the first time the players played an 18-hole round. The reserves will get another chance as they will go to the Pierce Invite and compete against some larger varsity squads.
