Boys' Golf at Districts

by Scott Guzinski

May 13, 2008

The Plainview golf team went to Norfolk and played their district on May 12th at the Norfolk Country Club.  The Pirates knew they were in contention for a state berth but needed their top four golfers to shoot well.  The team finished sixth out of the fifteen schools participating.  They had a team score of 354.  Norfolk Catholic won the meet with 336 while Ponca was runner-up with 340 and Hartington CC was the last team to qualify with 345.  Plainview was not the only disappointed team as this generally proves to be the toughest district and the top three do very well when they get to state.  Those left home have the ability to beat several of the teams from other parts of the state.

State will be held next Tuesday, May 20 and Wednesday, May 21 at the Kearney Country Club.  Brett Korth shot consistent rounds of 43-42 to finish in a tie for 10th place, which qualified him for a trip to state.  An indication of how important one shot in a round is, Josh Kounovsky was denied a return trip as he again just finished out of the medals with 44-43=87.  Nate Wragge and Josh Scranton completed the team scoring as they both had 91.  Adam Krueger with a 105 was the fifth member.

Plainview will return Nate Wragge who medalled in several tournaments this year to lead the team next season.  He must receive some help from Krueger along with Zac Masat who finished strong at the end of the season.  Jacob Proskovec and Nic Miller also played some varsity and need to refine their game this summer.

Final season stats will be released after state.
