Speech Team Brings Home Medals
The speech team's season is fully underway, and the members started bringing home more hardware from their last two outings. At the Lutheran High Meet in Norfolk, fourteen people brought home medals from the 8-team tournament. Kelsey Bonta earned the gold (1st place) in informative speaking. Silver medalists (2nd place finishers) were Cody Mosel in entertainment; Cherise Friedrich and Shelby Wattier in duet acting; Sara Christiansen in humorous prose, and Stephanie Westerhaus in Extemporaneous speaking. Third place medal-winners were Sarah Meuret in Persuasive, Michelle Sauser in Entertainment, and Caleb Nuehring in Extemp. Earning 4th place was Briana Hamm in Persuasive. Cherise Friedrich earned 5th place in humorous prose. And 6th place went to Brittany White in Serious Prose, Heidi Orona in Poetry, as well as the OID team of Brittany White, Sara Christiansen, Heidi Orona, Michael Moeller, and Cody Mosel.
On Saturday, February 13th, the team traveled to Wausa where they competed against quality-competition from Pierce, Hartington High, Hartington CC, Crofton, Laurel-Concord, Creighton, Orchard, Bloomfield, Coleridge, Wausa, and Niobrara. Stephanie Westerhaus brought home the 1st place medal as a persuasive speaker in the novice (1st year participants) division. Earning 2nd place medals were Sara Christiansen in novice humorous, and Kami Johnson and Morgan Hall in novice duet acting. Earning 3rd place medals were Michelle in Entertainment, Kelsey Bonta in informative, Sarah Meuret in persuasive, and Joanna Hu in novice poetry. The OID team of Sarah Meuret, Michelle Sauser, Kelsey Bonta, and Zach Masat brought home 5th place. Stephanie Westerhaus also earned 5th in novice extemp, as did Morgan Hall in persuasive.
The season opened with meets at Hartington High followed by West Point CC. Although a few people did bring home medals from those first meets, it wasnâÂÂt a strong showing overall. Coach Schindler blames some of it on Mother Nature for the weather that kept kids out of speech class on those snow days and late starts. However, the team is looking forward to finishing the season strong, with the upcoming Randolph meet, followed by Conference (NENAC) which is held in Crofton on February 27th, and Districts, which will be in Creighton on March 8th, starting at noon.
