With the direction of Lisa Klein of Plainview, Fashion Design and Clothing/Textiles students at Plainview High School completed 8 quilts for the Lincoln Chapter of Quilts for Kids, a volunteer based organization that makes and distributes quilts to sick children in Nebraska hospitals.  Quilts for Kids provides pre cut kits for volunteers to piece, quilt, and return.

“When Lisa approached me about this project, I immediately thought it would be a great way for the students to give to others while meeting our course objectives.  Additional positives included that there would be no cost to the students, they would learn quilting skills, and Lisa was willing to assist students in class.  When questioning students about the project, their positive response was overwhelming!” stated Ronita Jacobsen, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Plainview.

Each student included their name on the quilt along with name they created for the quilt.

Each student made a block quilt which will be presented to premature infants throughout hospitals in NE.  As the quilts were being made, students attached a care tag where they were able to record the name of the blanket and their own name.  “It was exciting to create and then name the blanket knowing that it will become a cherished family item,” stated Kami Johnson.

The Quilts for Kids vision …Sharing our love of quilting to help bring smiles to children-one stitch, one quilt, one child at a time.  This vision was seen as students created beautifully sewn quilts and desired perfection with every seam, as they wanted the best quilt for their infant.  Students have plans in progress to share the Quilts for Kids program at the District 8 FCCLA Leadership Conference with the goal to encourage other schools/FCCLA chapters across the state to take part in the program.
